NCAA | Is Omaha the toughest regional?

Four seeded teams remain; none have lost to a non-tournament team

Of the 16 teams still in the hunt, 12 earned seeds from the NCAA Tournament Committee. The only region where all four seeded teams survived was Omaha:

WEST LAFAYETTE REGIONAL

AUSTIN REGIONAL
(1) Penn St vs. (16) Kentucky

(3) Texas vs. (14) Florida
Purdue vs. (8) Minnesota

Wichita St vs. (6) Southern Cal

OMAHA REGIONAL

BERKELEY REGIONAL
(5) Oregon vs. (12) BYU

Michigan St vs. Michigan
(13) Washington vs. (4) Nebraska

(15) Iowa St vs. (2) Stanford

“It’s a pretty tough regional,” Nebraska coach John Cook told Volleyblog Seattle. “You look at the rankings, a lot of good teams in there.”

Here’s how the Omaha teams stack up:

opponents in bold have reached this year's Sweet 16

A few things stand out:
  • The four teams have lost a combined 19 matches (to 16 different teams—14 if you don’t count the two Washington/Oregon matches). None of those losses came against a team which did not qualify for the 64-team tournament. 12 of those 19 losses were to teams still alive in the Sweet 16.
  • Of the 19 losses, only one—Oregon’s second loss to Stanford—was an 0-3 sweep. 10 of the losses were in five sets; 7 of those were by just two points.
  • None of the teams have jaw-dropping preseason wins. Nebraska comes closest with it’s early squeaker at home against UCLA (15-13 in the fifth set). Washington and Oregon also defeated UCLA this season.

Cook says he feels vindicated by the Sweet 16 success of six Big Ten teams, especially Michigan and Michigan St. “ I've been saying all year that the Big Ten is better this year than it was last year. We lost to both Michigans on the road, back-to-back, and everyone here thought, what’s wrong with Nebraska? And I’m just, like, those guys are good. Now everybody else is seeing that they’re pretty good.”
