Pac-12 | Pac-12 Power Rankings: Week Three

Pac-12 is 81-21 in nonconference play.

The biggest story of the week involves an unlikely Pac-12 upstart. The Oregon State Beavers pulled off the upset of the young season by taking down mighty Penn State during a tournament in Chicago.

The Pac-12 responded accordingly, naming OSU’s Camille Saxton the conference offensive player of the week (an award won the previous week by Washington’s Krista Vansant.) Saxton’s teammate Becky Defoe was the defensive player of the week. Stanford’s happily-named Madi Bugg was the freshman of the week. (Washington players nominated this week include Kylin Muñoz for offense, Amanda Gil for defense and Lianna Sybelton for freshman.) Muñoz had a combined 17 kills and no errors on 32 swings (.531)

UCLA scored a big win at Hawai’i; USC held off San Diego, Oregon and Washington continue to roll.

Here’s how we see it …

1
UCLA
6-1
Only two tough matches so far this season: barely lost at Nebraska, won convincingly at Hawai’i
2
USC
9-0
Five-set win against San Diego showed all that’s good--and flawed--about the Trojans
3
Washington
8-0
Krista Vansant is steady every match; real fun is watching someone new emerge each contest; Sybeldon is latest bright light.
4
Oregon
7-0
Suddenly, Ducks’ Pac-12 opener against Penn State conqueror Oregon State looks like a must-see match
5
Stanford
6-2
Easy part of schedule allows Cardinal to work out kinks … won't really know this team until it plays a tough Pac-12 team on the road.
6
Oregon State
7-2
The Beavers make the Pac-12 proud; its only two losses are to 9-0 Kansas St and 7-1 Miami
7
California
5-3
Bears begin slow slog back to national respectability; weakest nonconference schedule this side of Washington
8
Washington State
7-2
Cougars aren’t playing the nation’s top teams, but they're beating the shorts off middling opposition.
9
Arizona State
7-2
Six-match win streak comes crashing to a halt in Kansas; close loss, however, to then-unbeaten Wyoming
10
Utah
7-4
Just when the Utes look like they might be gaining, they lose 4 of 5, though little shame in falling to up-and-coming BYU
11
Colorado
7-2
Buffs show they can beat weak teams in the Eastern Time Zone, too.
12
Arizona
5-3
Four-set loss at home to TCU is nothing for the Pac-12 to toot its horn about. ‘Cats look frazzled.
