The more you know about the how and why of volleyball, the more fun it is to watch and play.

This week, fifth-ranked Washington learned that the team will be hosting the first two rounds of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.

Washington coach Jim McLaughlin talks about why playing at home matters.

“Playing at home is meaningful,” says McLaughlin on this week’s edition of Quick Set. “Especially for our seniors.”

The more you know about the how and why of volleyball, the more fun it is to watch and play.

This week, fifth-ranked Washington conquered Oregon in one of the all-time classic matches of the Jim McLaughlin era.

Coach McLaughlin says he learned a lot about his team as it fought off 13 match points to beat the Ducks in five sets.

“I think it’s a huge lesson,” says McLaughlin on this week’s edition of Quick Set. “Just to be able to handle the situation and the magnitude of the situation. And to overcome the adversity, we learned a lot about our team.”

This week, Washington leads all 328 Division 1 teams in blocks per set. Washington coach Jim McLaughlin talks about one of the keys to being a great blocker.

Also this week, the Huskies dropped just their second match of the season, a 3-2 decision to Stanford. Coach McLaughlin admits the loss still stings, but explains why certain important lessons can sometimes only be learned after defeat. In particular, he cites the exceptional play of sophomore Kaleigh Nelson.

Jenna Orlandini: Talk, talk talk …

Washington’s sophomore libero Jenna Orlandini was handed a riddle by her coach, Jim McLaughlin:
Would you rather be a herd of sheep led by a lion, or a bunch of lions led by a sheep?

Tonight, during UWTV’s live coverage of Washington’s Pac-12 contest against UCLA, Orlandini chats with teammate Amanda Gil about the overriding importance of ... chatter on the court.

It’s all part of Quick Set, a new UWTV feature, to be broadcast during the break after the second set. If you attend the match in person, you can watch a replay on Monday at 4pm.

Lauren Barfield and Bianca Rowland: Ups and downs of being tall

6-5 Lauren Barfield and 6-0 Bianca Rowland know something about the ups and downs of growing up tall.

“When you’re younger, everybody wants to be the same, you know?” says Barfield. “So, when you’re really tall, you kind of stand out in a way you don’t want to.”

Tonight and tomorrow night, during UWTV’s live coverage of Washington’s Pac-12 contests against USC and UCLA, Barfield and Rowland chat with 6-6 teammate Amanda Gil about the challenges and rewards of being, well, above average.
