NCAA | Washington volleyball jumps to #3 in national media poll

AVCA poll elevates Penn State #1 and Cinderella team San Diego #2

Last week, Volleyblog Seattle rated San Diego two spots higher than the coaches, and three higher than other media. We were even bigger outliers with Arizona State, ranking the Sun Devils #11 compared to #20 for the media and unranked by the coaches.

This weekend, San Diego beat last week’s #1 USC, and Arizona State took care of last week’s #2 Texas.

Undefeated Washington rises to #3, the highest of any Pac-12 team this week. Cal head coach Rich Feller and George Mason head coach Pat Kendrick each named the Huskies #1. This year, 60 D1 coaches participate in the AVCA poll; Jim McLaughlin is not among them. Also:
  • 16 coaches selected Washington #2, including Penn State’s Russ Rose
  • Nebraska’s John Cook, Texas’ Jerritt Elliott, and Illinois’ Kevin Hambly were among those who ranked Washington #4.
  • Stanford’s John Dunning placed UW at #5.
  • Utah’s Beth Launiere and Florida’s Mary Wise selected Washington at #6.
  • Both USC’s Mick Haley and UCLA’s Mike Sealy pegged the Huskies at #7.
  • Marshall University’s (West Virginia) Mitch Jacobs rated Washington 9th, lowest of any ballot

The coaches are still missing the boat on Arizona State, a team just one controversial call away from being undefeated.
