In 12+ seasons,
Washington’s winningest coach has the edge on most opponents

When third-ranked Washington
swept Loyola-Chicago Sunday, it was
coach Jim McLaughlin’s 300th
victory at the school. We thought we’d break down that impressive milestone.
His very first weekend coaching Washington, back in 2001, the Huskies lost
their first and third matches, to BYU
and Texas, with a win against Purdue sandwiched between.
- Since that weekend, Washington has lost only three more nonconference matches in 13 seasons, twice to Hawai’i (both times in Hawai’i, 3-1 in 2002 and 3-2 in 2008), and once more to Texas (3-2 in 2006). The 3-2 Texas loss was 15-13 in the fifth set; the 3-2 loss to Hawai’i was 16-14 in the fifth set.
- The current nonconference win streak is 46 in a row, and counting.
- BYU and Texas are the only teams Washington has played under McLaughlin without a win. UW is 0-2 under McLaughlin against both. The 3-2 loss to BYU in the 2007 Tournament was—you guessed it—15-13 in the fifth set.
Only three other schools have winning records against
McLaughlin at Washington: his teams are 10-14 against USC, 9-18 against Stanford
and 1-2 against Minnesota. UW is 2-2
against Nebraska.
- Under McLaughlin, UW is 1-2 against Stanford in the NCAA Tournament, and has not faced USC in postseason.
- Four of the losses to Stanford—and six defeats at the hands of USC—were by 3-2 margins.
- Other than Minnesota and Nebraska, Washington under McLaughlin is 10-0 against teams currently in the Big Ten.
McLaughlin’s most success has come against Oregon State, with 22 wins, followed
closely by Oregon, Arizona State and Washington State, with 20 wins each.
- McLaughlin’s Washington teams have never lost to a non-Pac-12/Pac-10 team from the Northwest.
