Early-season power ratings are more art than science. In this week's Pac-12 rankings, we stick our necks out for ASU …

USC

Ebony Nwanebu could be another in a long line of scary-good Trojan frosh; led the team to wins over two ranked teams.
2
Stanford

1-0
Cardinal have lots of scary-good sophomores; get their first real test this weekend against Florida and Texas.
3
Washington

Scary moment for Huskies when Vansant tweaked her ankle; Canadian Natl Team offers a peek at older, international players.
4
Arizona St

Sun Devils knocked off ranked Wichita St, but stays unranked by nation's coaches. We remain wary of ASU’s ascent until proven otherwise.
5
UCLA

Bruins pushed around by Loyola Marymount; big test Saturday against Hawai’i in Honolulu
6
Oregon

Ducks have decidedly different chemistry this season: will they melt or catch fire? Weekend matches at Michigan, Mich St could tell.
7
Arizona
0-0
2-1
‘Cats no pushover with Croson, Kingdon and Magil, but lost to Kansas, which lost to Central Arkansas, which lost to Arizona
8
California

Two workmanlike wins before a real test at Creighton; can Gehan provide leadership for this oh-so-young team?
9
Oregon St

Last season, Beavers shocked Penn State. Can they do the same this season vs Michigan and/or Michigan State?
10
Utah

Utes avoided an upset at the hands of Utah St, and needed four sets against Fairfield and N Iowa. Just two seniors on roster.
11
Washington St

Cougs have a lot of talented freshmen, led by Kyra Holt (49 kills); a weak nonconference schedule could build (false?) confidence.
12
Colorado
0-0
1-1
Buffs split a pair with respectable St. Mary’s, but odd preseason schedule will make them hard to peg.

And our new preseason feature continues, ranking this weekend's Pac-12 nonconference matchups from hottest (must-see) to coldest (yawn). Washington's two matches against Team Canada are exhibitions, and not included.

  2. Great question. Headed to Key Arena right now, and will see which rules apply (although we suspect home court--NCAA--rules may be used.)

The international game allows far fewer substitutions. There are also "technical" time-outs as soon as one team reaches 8 points and again when one reaches 16.
