NCAA | Washington volleyball escapes media poll scramble

Check out which teams remain in rankings despite recent lack of success

Lots of movement this week in the Volleyball Magazine media poll, although Washington remains a strong #3 across the board.

Voters, as might be expected, punished #10 Southern California after the Trojans lost to both the Huskies and Cougars. Stanford, San Diego and especially Nebraska all moved in to fill the vacuum.

Losing, however, doesn’t hurt you if you’re in the middle of the Big Ten pack. For this week’s chart, we decided to assemble ranked teams’ records over the past ten matches. Check out the recent records of Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan and Purdue, then ask what it takes for lower-ranked voters to leapfrog them.

NOTES:

• In case you missed it, Washington’s Krista Vansant was named both the National Player of the Week and the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week after getting a combined 35 kills in home court victories against UCLA and USC, completing regular-season sweeps of both schools. Vansant is the first Washington player since Sanja Tomasevic to win the national Sports Import/AVCA award at least twice in her career. Earlier this season, sophomore middle Lianna Sybeldon also earned the national honor. Between them, Vansant, Sybeldon and Jenna Orlandini have won either the offensive or defensive Pac-12 award seven times this season.
• Washington confirmed that three high school players have signed national letters of intent for next fall. Bellarmine Prep’s Courtney Schwan—recently named MVP of the state 4A tournament for the second year in a row—will be joined by two Southern Californians, Tia Scambray of Dana Point and Crissy Jones of Los Alamitos. Both Californians compete for Tstreet, the same junior club as current Huskies Cassie Strickland and Bailey Tanner (whose father, Troy Tanner, founded Tstreet.) None of the three freshmen on the current UW roster—Tanner, Carly DeHoog and Jade Finau—have seen match action this season, so the Huskies will effectively have six new players next season once they graduate Gabbi Parker, Jenni Nogueras, Jenna Orlandini and Kylin Muñoz.
