Huskies attract top-line broadcast teams for Rocky Mountain Matches

Hard-core Washington fans—those who attend every home match—will get their very first chance this weekend to see their team on the fledgling Pac-12 Network (the match at Arizona was not televised.)

Paul Sunderland, Amy Gant, Chris Marlowe, Al Scates

The Network is rewarding the Huskies by bringing out its broadcasting A-teams:

• Tonight in Utah, it will be Paul Sunderland and Amy Gant. Sunderland, 60, is a polished broadcast pro, and distinguished himself as NBC’s indoor volleyball play-by-play announcer for the London Olympics. He was an All-American at Loyola Marymount, and a member of the 1984 Olympic gold medal team. Gant, 36, starred at BYU from 1994-97, and spent time on the roster of the US National Team.
• Sunday in Boulder, Chris Marlowe and Al Scates will do the chores. Marlowe, 61, has made his living behind the microphone for decades and has pretty much covered every significant volleyball competition around. He was a San Diego State All-American and Sunderland’s Olympic gold teammate in 1984 (also on that team: Craig Buck, brother of Volleyblog Seattle’s Leslie Hamann.) Marlowe’s partner, Al Scates, 73, is the legendary former men’s coach of UCLA, where his teams won 19 National Championships during his 50 seasons at the helm and recorded 1,239 victories over that span.

Quite a lineup of television talent.

None of these broadcasters was assigned to any of Washington’s first three home Pac-12 matches, where complaints were heard about mispronouncing names, failure to explain referee’s calls, and even overlooking the fact that Washington pulled its setter as Kylin Muñoz stepped back to serve. During a preseason volleyball preview, one Pac-12 Network commentator referred to the team as the “Lady Huskies” … using a diminutive that is popular in the SEC and Big-12, but counts as a politically incorrect faux pas in the Pac-12 (except, perhaps, at USC, which used to call its teams The Women of Troy …)

If you miss the live telecasts (seriously? for the nation’s undefeated second-ranked team?), consult the Pac-12 Network schedule for replay broadcasts.

NOTES:

• It snowed overnight in Boulder, but the forecast for Sunday calls for clear and 56 degrees. In Utah today, the weather is sunny and in the low 60s.
• As we reported yesterday, the Pac-12 Network has no plans to broadcast next week’s Washington @ Oregon match … the only two currently undefeated teams in Division 1. Oregon says it will provide a live web stream, but still no word on what it will cost or who will be on the broadcast team.
